Help Heal Harley

Harley is a 13 year old girl who has a spinal column deformity that without surgery could cause her to be paralyzed.

While in utero, it was diagnosed that Harley's spine was not developing normally. At birth the doctors informed us that Harley had a spinal condition called hemivertebra; this causes different forms of scoliosis.

Harley as a child had a bump on the small of her back and the doctors informed us that surgery would be for cosmetic reasons. Harley continued to see the doctor each year to make sure her spine was not curving out of control. Four years ago the doctors noticed that her spine was moving and curving more then was expected, in hopes of stopping her spine from curving more a recommendation was made to wear a custom made medical brace. The brace would have to be worn at night, every night with only one or two nights off a year (Christmas and her birthday). Harley while wearing the brace had her growth spurt and the doctor appointments started every six months to keep a closer eye on her spinal movement.

Harleys last appointment showed that her spine had moved to a point where the brace was no longer helping her and surgery was necessary. The appointment for a cat-scan and a MRI was made so the doctors would have all the measurements and information needed for the surgery. The results returned and the doctors office called and informed us of a mass or sack of some sort had shown up on Harleys spine and the doctor would be referring Harley to a neurosurgeon. The two doctors will confer and come up with the best course of action. All of this is being handled in Jacksonville Florida at The Nemours Children's Clinic / Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children.

Harley loves animals. Horses and dogs are her greatest love. In 2008 after winning ribbons and some trophies, Harley won Grand Champion in a western pleasure horse show. Harleys love for dogs goes beyond comprehension. Harley has worked with her family dog to teach agility tricks. Harley hopes one day to own her own dog and compete in agility competitions. She loves to swim and go to to the beach. Harley's friends mean the world to her and friendship is everything. Harley's aspirations are to go to college, help and work with animals, and have dogs that will help the handicap.

The long term prognoses is great with a full recovery after about six months. The day of surgery will be a long day followed by five to seven days in the hospital after witch Harley will come home. The next three months Harley will be laid up with limited movement - meaning bed rest. Harleys schooling will take place at the house with the help of the school system sending a teacher to tutor her and also classes on the computer. After three months, more mobility and the possibility of being able to go outside. Harley's return to school will depend on her rehabilitation and the doctors giving a clean bill of health. Given Harley's strong will and determination, we believe she will not only get through this but exceed everyone's expectations.

The family would like to thank everyone for their support and generosity.
